Pie & Vinyl Presents: Record Store Day 2018

by Danny Hines, Apr 16, 2018

Southsea's Pie & Vinyl bring you Pompey's biggest street party to mark Record Store Day 2018

Record Store Day is once again just around the corner, one of the most exciting days of the year for all you wax aficionados and music lovers! For the uninitiated, Record Store Day brings over 200 independent record shops from all across the UK together to celebrate the most beloved music medium - vinyl!

Special releases are made exclusively for the day from dozens of incredible artists and many shops and cities host performances and events to mark the occasion.

Southsea’s Pie & Vinyl are spearheading a fantastic FREE event in Pompey to mark the occasion along with The Village Popup, working with other local businesses, artists and musicians to turn Castle Road into the biggest street party of the year with over 40 unique vendors. Familiar faces from around the city will line the street with stalls and stages, bringing the best of the best in music, culture and food right into the heart of Southsea.

Pie & Vinyl also have free gifts for the first 100 people in the door, ranging from test pressings & promo’s to T-shirts, posters and key rings! So get down early to be in with a chance at getting those freebies, the event starts at 8:00am so set your alarms and have a coffee at the ready.

The bravest amongst you are also welcome to camp outside the store overnight, previous years have seen campers outside from as early as 10:00am the previous day. The event will wind down at around 7:00pm, so if you’re still ready to party then Palmerston Road is only a stone-throw away and is home to some of the coolest bars in Southsea - we recommend Hong Kong Charlie’s vodka bar.

Live artwork comes from Play Dead Studio and local legend My Dog Sighs, with music provided by some of the hottest artists of the moment from Pompey and beyond. The line-up features some of our local favourites including Psych Rock outfit Melt Dunes, expect face-melting riffs from another planet, who you can also catch at Portsmouth Psych Fest the following weekend along with Hotel Lux and Barbudo.

Vinyl-only DJ's will also be spinning tunes throughout the day.

Of course, there will also be a myriad of exclusive vinyl releases to pick up on the day from a huge range of diverse artists. Some of Native’s top picks come from indie heroes Arcade Fire, goth legends The Cure, Descendents, Jake Bugg, Mac Demarco and the immortal Illmatic from New-York rap icon Nas.

There is very limited stock for each release, so be sure to get down as early as possible to have a chance at getting your mits on your favourite record. If you’re desperate to cop a particular record, Pie & Vinyl are taking requests from the entire Record Store Day 2018 catalogue, more information here.

If all of that doesn’t satisfy your undying passion for live music, the following day you can also catch Lost Avenue, an Alternative/Punk three piece from Derry, at intimate Southsea venue The Festing. Support comes from Portsmouth’s own Sigma Falls, a favourite of the local scene, playing a radio-friendly blend of Rock/Punk/Grunge. This event is brought to you by local promoter Nerd Rage BookingsCheck out our preview of the event.
