We take a look at one of Bristol's leading record labels and party-throwers.

Established in 2012, Coyote Records has spent the last 5 years forging a strong name for itself within the UK's exploding grime circuit through releases from the likes of Silk Road Assassins, Last Japan, Tom E. Vercetti and Bristol’s OH91.

Coyote record’s first ever release COY001 came from London based Mella Dee. Entitled CTRL, this pulse-esque track is a far cry from Mella Dee’s more recent breakbeat and techno offerings, but it sets the bar for Coyote’s future releases.

Over the years, the label has continued to release square wave and percussion-rich grime, culminating in their most recent release, COY018:
Shuttle by OH91. Released a full 5 years after COY001, it’s not hard to hear where the label’s heart lies in terms of the sound they’re pushing in the UK.

It’s safe to assume that part of their success has come from their keen ear for this style of club-orientated grime, and their willingness to stick to their guns regardless of the ever-evolving demands of the underground music scene, particularly as the relatively young genre continues to grow.

The label isn’t afraid to stray from their foundations and signature sound, though. COY011 comes courtesy of
Tom E. Vercetti. As one third of Silk Road Assassins, Vercetti’s debut EP Future Perfect is an icy, hi-hat strewn record which works as well in the club as it does at home.

As it secures its position within the genre, the label seems able to occasionally distance itself from the requirements of the club. As a relative newcomer to the Coyote Records crew, Mark's Drain EP is a spacey ambient number unlike most of Coyote’s previous releases which has gained support from Complex UK and others.

Despite COY0017 sounding more comfortable in a post-rave scenario, key aspects of Coyote’s sound still remain and this emphasises the label’s ability to scout out the sonic aesthetic they’ve become renowned for.

As well as an ever-growing portfolio of unique tracks built for the dancefloor and beyond, Coyote Records has hosted a number of shows on the UK’s go-to underground radio station, Rinse FM. They’ve hosted the likes of Last Japan, Marks and Bristol’s Drone, Jurango and OH91 over the past 12 months, allowing them to make the most of Rinse’s national and international reach to exhibit their label’s music, played directly from the producers themselves.

Their independent and personal approach to showcasing what the label has to offer spans beyond the radio, though. A consistent string of intimate club nights allow Coyote Records to put their releases through their paces in the environment they were intended for. With a regular line up of artists from their label as well as some big special guests, these nights do not disappoint!

Coyote Records’ Bristol nights are hosted in Crofters Rights, Stokes Croft, and past special guests include Bok Bok, Tarquin, Mssingno, Dark0, Naina and Riz La Teef (read more about the sensational selector here).

So that's Coyote Records, the only thing left to do now is to get down to one of their club nights. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for details.
