As the opening night of Brighton's newest music space, Hideout, draws ever closer, the buzz around the city is tangible.

Colours are a southeast collective dedicated to the very best in UK Bass. Following the launch party hosted by Nightshift Records, colours, in collaboration with Saucy Records, have the enviable task of hosting Hideout's first Saturday event on March 3rd.

Inviting none other than bass music veteran Marcus Nasty, this second event sees Hideout stay true to their ethos of not only supporting local talent, but catering for a range of tastes. Their debut sees moody techno icon Darmec descend upon the city, followed immediately by a night of bassline, grime, and UK funky.

We caught up with the people behind colours to find out more about their upcoming show:

So, to start off, can you introduce the people behind colours?

Niall: Colours is run by Jamie, Alex and myself. We are three artists from the southeast and originally met putting on small bass events in our local town, East Grinstead. In terms of roles, there tends to be a pretty equal division of labour. Alex also acts as our in-house graphic designer, which is a fairly key role in pretty much everything we do.

And how did colours start?

Alex: Well we started it because there wasn't a big bass music night in our hometown, then the local club got shut down to add to the lack of nightlife. We thought it would be fun to throw an event, and the reception we received was incredible! From then on we had a brand so thought we may as well keep running with it, so I guess we accidentally created an events brand.

Your next event is at Hideout on March 3rd - what do you think of the venue?

Jamie: Predominantly we love the dark underground look of the club situated under the Kings road arches, not to mention the brand new Funktion-one evolution sound system which is the first in the UK!

We love the layout of the club, the bunker style roof and partitioned areas allow the DJ to be surrounded by the 300 cap crowd creating that intimate experience.

And it's in collaboration with Saucy records - tell us about them.

Niall: Saucy are a label that have been consistently putting out forward thinking, original music for a number of years now. Taking a different approach to many of the current labels and Soundcloud/Youtube channels, they are a label that has invariably prioritised quality of releases rather than quantity. Personally, they are a label that I’ve really admired since way before I ever started making tracks!

What are the challenges that come with hosting an event at a brand new location?

Alex: The main issue is that nobody has ever been to Hideout, Colours is literally going to be the second night it opens its doors. Although saying that, it also makes it more exciting, so I don't really see it as a negative at all.

What do you think Hideout will add to the Brighton scene?

Jamie: Hideout will not only provide Brighton with that much-needed intermediate club but also supports a network of upcoming and coming local talent of all underground genres. Plus, the prospect of this new seafront club providing some healthy competion to the local nightlife scene has already got us excited about the future of Bass music in Brighton.

You've booked Marcus Nasty as the headliner - what kind of DJ is he?

Niall: Marcus is a true heavyweight in the UK Bass scene. He has also been a central figure in underground music in the UK for a long time, and for this reason we’re very excited to be having him down to Brighton. As a DJ, Marcus is known to dabble in pretty much every sub genre - Expect a mixture of Bassline, Funky and Grime.

And on support?

Alex: The support is mainly Saucy plus Jamie & Niall. The reason why we wanted to work with Saucy is we thought their dark underground sound represented Hideout's image perfectly! Plus, I think they're all insanely good producers with bright futures.

What else has colours got coming up in 2018?

Jamie: As a brand we hope to continue to grow and put on innovative events throughout the South of England. Keep an eye on our socials for what’s coming up near you!

Finally, what are you listening to right now?

Jamie: Daze Prism - The Wob (STPT)
Alex: The Grid - CASISDEAD
Niall: Phatworld - Out of Space
