The Sussex Student Union bar in town, will be no more come March 17th

It’s time to say goodbye to yet another beloved student bar in Brighton. The Globe, owned by University of Sussex Students’ Union (USSU) has announced it will be closing its doors with the last day of trading confirmed as 17th March.

Currently owned by The Laines Pub company, who rent it out to the Students’ Union, the bar will be sold to a new owner, and it is not yet clear what will be done with the venue.

USSU issued a statement confirming staff have been made aware of the closure and what will happen to their jobs. “We have discussed options for them going forward, and have already ensured that there are positions available in our campus outlets for all Globe staff should they wish to stay with the Union.

“While we are sorry to say goodbye, we are focussing our energy on ensuring we develop social spaces on campus – the hub of student life at Sussex.

“We have exciting plans for the year ahead with works already in the pipeline to improve our provision at Falmer Bar, increase our capacity and move to seven days a week trading with a healthy late license, launching a new venue in Northfield and plans to improve and expand the service at the Clubhouse in time for the new academic year.”

While this news will sadden many students and Brighton locals who have spent many an hour there, be sure to head down to The Globe to say goodbye in style with farewell events taking place from 12th March.
