Native Mix #002: Discojuice

The Native Mix

Touching down for guest mix number two is a superbly colourful collective by the name of Discojuice.

Headed up by four Sussex students, Discojuice is a passion project moulded into existence by a quartet of honest discophiles. Starting out by scraping together enough bank to hire out Volks (a club at the uh, cheaper end of the booking scale), the Discojuice crew impressed by throwing consistent parties with exceptional music in the modest venue. Today, they have transcended any one venue and are blasting global rhythms all over the city. Their last night at the Komedia Studio was Radar's pick of the week back in December, catching our eye with stunning artwork and a commitment to all things groovy.

So, less than a year old, Discojuice is continuing in its quest to bring afrobeat, jazz, italo, house, latin, and breakbeat tunes to our Southern shores and beyond, with plans to crack the London scene in the coming months. Before that though, we look to February 10th when Discojuice will be bringing their globe-trotting aesthetic to the MONO tunnel. The headliner for this event is Tom Blip, the DJ behind the rising Leeds record label Blip Discs. The label only has a handful of releases to its name but one of which is the glowingly reviewed and comprehensively spun 'Tyrion/Desmond's Empire' by O'Flynn. 'The Story of Blip Discs is the stuff of record label fairytales' and the dude at the top has proved to be one of the most trustworthy selectors around.

In support you'll find Discojuice residents Alex Ramos AKA Nosebone b2b with Eptune and completing the billing is Gwarnsford, another upstairs-at-Patterns staple. This mix comes from the fingers of founder Alex Ramos. As always, we've got a quickfire Q&A below.

1. What's been your favourite party so far?

Our favourite Discojuice party has to be the one we had back in October with Al Zanders and Krywald & Farrer at Al Duomos. The intimate and joyous vibe inside our favourite Italian restaurant was exactly what we look to create at our events, everyone there was having a great time! Al Zanders played an unreal set, Krywald & Farrer brought out the big disco heaters and some electric edits and the supporting DJs also stepped up. The event proved why we reckon that Al Duomos is one of the best event spaces in Brighton. You will definitely be seeing another Discojuice event there soon.

2. What's your dream booking?

For our dream booking, its hard to decide between the Rush Hour guys Hunee and Antal or Move D or Jeremy Underground. All of those DJs are at the height of their powers at the moment and bring such a impeccable range of music to each set. They all make such highly intelligent selections. However If we had to narrow it down to one, we would have to choose Hunee, there really is little that he can do wrong these days. Importantly, every set he does is different from the last, yet crucially he never fails to bring that sense of euphoria and excitement to each set. It would be great to see him play on the South Coast.

3. What are you listening to right now?

Right now we are listening to an Afro disco banger: Thomas Frempong - Mada Meho So. We’ve been listening to it for a while and still haven't got bored yet.
