The hook-heavy pop rockers, Weezer, have covered everybody's favourite sing-a-long anthem, Africa, by Toto!

Today truly is a blessed day. It is a day that none of us expected to come, nor knew we wanted it to. Unless of course, you are the person behind the @weezerafrica twitter account - as the handle suggests, this is a fan page entirely devoted to the idea of Weezer performing Toto's seminal 1982 sensation, Africa. According to Noisey, the page was set up by a 14-year-old named Mary who started the Twitter campaign. The Noisey team, a subsidiary of Vice, have been campaigning for the band's release of the song too. Quite simply put, the popular music centred digital news site said;

  1. "We like Weezer.
  2. We like “Africa.” It is the Noisey go-to karaoke song. Also, after 5 PM on Fridays, HR lets us play music in the office and, as any of our coworkers can attest to, we kick off the weekend by blasting it at stun volume until people get annoyed and go home.
  3. We are the internet generation and we feel entitled to things just by getting enough people online to demand them."

The campaign started with a simple tweet to the lead singer of Weezer, Rivers Cuomo...

Months went by but the page stayed hopeful...

Their success didn't come without some playful trolling by the California rock band after they released a cover of Toto's (let's be honest) other popular song...

Finally, after 6 months since the page was set up and the first tweet was posted, it happened...

 What's next for the page? What band will be next to feature on a special Africa only cover album?
