The Soundcrash Funk & Soul Weekender returns for another year of celebrating the very best that Funk and Soul music have to offer. This weekend of music celebrates not only what the aforementioned two seminal genres have to offer, but the very best in hip-hop, jazz, RnB, and world music will all be there.
Following two sold out years, The Funk & Soul Weekender 2019 has moved to a brand new location on the iconic Brighton Beach. A 10 minute walk from Brighton railway station, a 20 minute bus on the number 25x to Old Steine for Sussex University students and 15 minutes for Brighton University students, getting to the beach is simple.
Friday: Old school, smooth hip-hop royalty, The Pharcyde, are coming to Brighton. The "Passin' Me By" rappers are joined by none other than Mr. Funk and Soul himself, Craig Charles and Norman Jay (MBE)! We're keeping our eye out for Swedish RnB star, Fatima who is a fierce live performer and Kamaal Wiliams, jazz maestro Henry Wu's latest project.
Saturday: The big boss himself Giles Peterson is taking over the second day; we had the pleasure of having him play our show on the beach in 2017 and can't wait to see him back on the coast. The incredible voices of Alice Russel and Yazmin Lacey bring enough soul to Brighton to last them until next summer alone.
Sunday: Kamasi Washington, what is there to say about the extremely talented Jazz musician that you don't already know? Absolutely everyone is there to see the LA saxophonist after the success of his "Heaven and Earth" album last summer. Washington is amongst serious soul royalty; with ihs first release in 1969 (!), Lee Fields is here with The Expressionists to show us how it's done, even after all those years.
