We caught up with garage-punk band Avalanche Party over a bottle of Buckfast before their explosive Cafe Totem gig.
Avalanche Party are a garage-punk band from the North Yorkshire Moors consisting of Jordan Bell and Jared Thorpe as vocals and guitar, Kane Waterfield on drums, Joe Bell on bass and Glen Adkins on keys.
Anyone who has seen Avalanche Party before will know the kind of power and passion they bring to the stage, with Jordan Bell dripping in a concoction of sweat and Buckfast before even finishing their opening song.
Jordan: I have no idea, it just came out of thin air, Joe came up with it and we all just thought it sounded dead good.
Jared: We had loads of daft names that weren’t very good but ‘Avalanche Party’ came up and we were just all like ‘That’s the one.’. We haven’t figured out yet why we like it, we just do.
Jordan: Kane and Jared and the others were all in bands and we did gigs together, and eventually we all just ended up in the same band, but we’re all from different areas like Whitby and Scarborough.
Jared: We were all born within a 100 mile radius, so I think it was bound to happen.
Kane: my dad was in a band, so he’d take us to lot of festivals as a kid, and I started drumming from a young age through watching my dad’s bands and stuff like that. And Jordan and Joe’s dad was similar, so we’ve just been brought up on music.
Jordan: I think Jared just wanted to get out of Scarborough.
Kane: And we just found Glen in Darlington one day and said "come with us, we’ll look after you". Half the time he’s not even plugged in.
Jordan: Me mam used to put ‘Stagger Lee’ on in the car when she was taking us to football when we were about 9. There were definitely others before it but that’s the first one I remember.
Jared: ‘Man, I Feel Like a Woman’, that got played a lot in my front room, I think it was the only CD we had.
Kane: My dad is into a lot of rubbish really, so I got brought up on a lot of heavy stuff like industrial but I’m not really into that myself. I got brought up on a lot of Oasis as well.
Jordan: I’ve always liked The Brudenell (Leeds).
Jared: I love playing for the guys who run ‘The Sesh’ in Hull and Humber Street Sesh, everything we do for them is always really good. Café Indiependent in Scunthorpe is a cool venue too and they have a good Wetherspoons around the corner.
Jordan: Glen does it all, he will draw up a few things and then we will pick the ones we like.
Jordan: Mine, I’m not saying which nipple though.
Jared: It’s actually a picture of all of our nipples edited together.
Kane: to make the one super-nipple!
Jordan: Big, Dirty, Stinky, people always say that we’re feral.
Jordan: Barbados… I don’t know, just somewhere nice.
Jared: I’d like to go on a long tour, forever.
Kane: Just new places all around the world.
Kane: It’s dying in the mainstream but the underground part of it isn’t.
Jared: There’s a few shit bands at the minute who, as far as I’m concerned, aren’t even real rock n roll who say that they’re bringing guitar music back but they’re not.
Kane: It’s just poppy crap now. There’s a few bands who we’ve met on the way who are just unbelievable though.
Jared: Listen to Life, Strange Bones, The Blinders, Vulgarians.
Kane: There are so many good bands out there you just need to get off your arse and go to a gig.
Jordan: James Brown
Jared: Jimi Hendrix
Kane: Barry White
Jordan: Elvis Presley – ‘Love me Tender’
Kane: *Starts singing ‘I’m Every Woman’ by Chaka Kahn*
Jared: I’d do Michael Jackson – ‘Rock with You’ but slowed down.
Jared: We make a cocktail of Buckfast and prosecco, a Buckfast spritzer.
Jordan: Don’t bother, get a real job. Unless you like stress, and stress, and stress.
Jared: Just get out there and do it, man.
Jordan: Nah, just do it though and give it time because nothing happens overnight.
Jared: I mean we haven’t even fucking done owt yet.
Jared: We’re releasing a vinyl in March which will have all the singles on from the past year so after that we’re moving forward onto new music.
