If cheap entry, The Smiths and ending the night with a heartfelt rendition of Mr. Brightside sounds like your perfect night out - read on!

Do you lose control every time you hear the opening riff from ‘Mr. Brightside’? Does a mix of The Smiths, Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons and a sprinkle of electro look like your ideal spotify playlist?’ Then Connection on Thursday is the answer to your nightlife prayers.

Begun in the mid 90s, it is the longest running indie night in Portsmouth. It used to be based in Scandals–a popular cellar bar–but, when the building was turned into student accommodation in 2016, Connection briefly moved to Popworld and then, over a year ago, to Zanzi, in Guildhall Walk. With its intimate atmosphere, Zanzi resembles much more the renowned venue that saw Connection come to life.

Since the beginning, the night has been run by award-winning DJ Pete Scathe, a true living legend in the Portsmouth alternative nightlife community. ‘The special thing about it after all these years is that people still really enjoy it,’ he explains. ‘I sometimes have people chanting "We love you Pete!" at the end of a night [been there!] or telling me how much the night means to them.’

Pete likes to play songs from different decades, but also recent favourites. The most popular song requests? ‘I guess it would be Arctic Monkeys – “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor”, Two Door Cinema Club – “What You Know” and The Smiths – “This Charming Man,” reckons Pete, 'but of course song requests change constantly as new songs get released! Currently I get a lot of requests for, say, Slaves or Sundara Karma.'

Anything indie, retro or electro alternative fits in perfectly with the spirit of Connection.

‘I think people really appreciate the way I communicate with them about what they want, and don't just stick to a set playlist,’ explains Pete. In fact, he usually passes round a paper where we can write down our song requests; personally, I always chuck ‘Come On Eileen’ on there, because I cannot think of any other club night in town where such a tune could be enjoyed properly.

It’s also mega cheap! Only £3 full price entry, perfect for students' tight budgets. If you pick up a leaflet from The Deco, The Atrium or The Honest Politician, then you can get yourselves in for £2.

Could it get any better than that? You bet! If you put down your name in the guestlist on the Facebook group, entry is just a quid!
