We chat to Bristolian bass connoisseurs and party planners, Chapters!
Chapters is a fresh faced, newly established multi-genre events and promotions company hailing from one of the UK’s bassiest cities, Bristol. Having established themselves in their home town, putting on two outrageous sold out nights at the Bristol Bierkeller and the Blue Mountain Club, they now look to broaden their horizons with their first ever out of town event at Nottingham’s Bodega featuring “the prince of UKG”, Conducta!
Where did Chapters come from, and what was the inspiration behind the name?
The idea is that each event it's a different chapter in the evolution of the night. We look to make each one unique and different while building on what's come before.
What does Bristol as a city and a music scene have to offer that other cities don’t?
Underground dance music is at the heart of Bristol as a city. It's no coincidence that there's a constant stream of dark bassy productions coming from here. You can sense the creative energy as you walk down the streets covered in Graffiti (of course some of it Banksy's). It's alternative without being ostentatious with people able to do their own thing without giving you a lecture on their gap year to Thailand (we leave that to the Uni students).
This is your first event outside of Bristol, what made you choose The Bodega, Nottingham?
Nottingham's a city that reminds us a lot of Bristol with a thriving music scene which is more diverse than the multitude of Tech-House that's become preeminent in many parts of the UK. It's also played a massive part in the reemergence of Bassline, with artists like Darkzy and Mr V, which features in some capacity in all of our events. We were always looking to do a smaller show for the first one out of town and Bodega was perfect - such an awesome space for an intimate show.
Can you talk me through the lineup of the event on 30th of January?
The big name is obviously Conducta 'the prince of UKG' who's really making the classic sounds relevant for a new generation mixing it with elements of bassline and grime. Supporting him we've got MilBil, a Bassline/Garage/House duo from Bristol who've played at all of our shows to date and have smashed it every time, as well as Fozo who's had releases clocking up over 100k plays on Deeprot and will be putting a UKG twist on his usual Bassline madness to get the party started.
Who would be on your dream line up for a Chapters night?
Hard one to answer! We'd have to have a big live performer on there; someone bring some hard-hitting grime like Wiley or Kano. Throw in some top level DJs to support like Sir Spyro and DJ Q as well as a UKG legend like MJ Cole to finish up with those sweet garage vibes.
What’s your favourite venue on a night out?
So many to choose from but we'll stick with the Bristol theme and go with Motion. Something very special about losing yourself in thousands of ravers in the main room before heading to the tunnel where you're practically face to face with the DJ.
Finally, what do you envision for Chapters’ future?
Bigger and better without losing the raw feel to it. We're looking into a big summer show in Bristol in the summer hopefully booking a few live acts while trying to establish ourselves in Nottingham and Cardiff with lower profile events with some of our favourite DJs right now.
