Native Mix #009: ANSYS

The Native Mix

Grime, UK Bass and fucking around with smoke machines, introducing: ANSYS.

ANSYS is the ambitious project of a pair of third year students from our very own University of Sussex. The genre-hopping night, which is currently half way through a four-date residency at Sticky Mike's Frog Bar, owes its beginnings to a series of fortuitous events halfway across the world: Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Summer 2015: two fresh-faced engineering students, Josh and Archie, disembark an airbus with only one thing on their minds: studying. Just kidding. The first port of call in Hong Kong was to find a reputable venue that played good quality bass music. By getting in contact with the head of Heavy Hong Kong, the pair of ambitious young travellers caught wind of a pier party featuring quickfire sets from a slew of DJs and musicians, plus an upcoming event featuring a little slice of home - Lady Chann, 'the UK's number one Dancehall Queen'.

Not satisfied with merely finding these events, the resourceful pair asked the organiser if there was any chance to play a set at a future party. As luck would have it, a slot had just opened up supporting Lady Chann, and their contact, Lai Fai, was open to the idea - all he needed was a promo mix.

The opportunity was there for the taking - the only problem, having come straight from Sonar festival in Barcelona, neither of them had any equipment to record one, not even a laptop. Using an old one was out of the question - this mix had to be a) perfect and b) suitable for this event.

So, the duo did what any industrious DJs would do - torrented a copy of Traktor, they bought a controller, got it delivered to the house of some guy they met at an afterparty and got to work on their flatmate's ancient laptop.

Impressed by the promo mix (which unfortunately seems to have been lost to the sands of time), Josh n Archie secured the spot supporting Lady Chann - on the condition that they 'absolutely smash it'.

And smash it they did. Sadly, the meat of that set only lives on in the memories of the ANSYS DJs and a few Chinese ravers, but what we can offer is some post-party footage of the last remaining party-goers having it large to Mr. Happy after the lights went up:

Fast forward about 18 months and ANSYS are gearing up for the third party of their four month residency at Sticky Mike's Frog Bar. Since January, the third Friday of the month has become a notorious date at Sticky Mike's Frog Bar. These early months of 2017 have witnessed the venue's, ahem, liveliest residency in recent memory.

Named after a piece of engineering software that, and I quote, 'simulates solid and fluid stuff', the roots of ANSYS are inseparable from the students behind it. Even their posters often consist of engineering projects that have been warped, replicated and Photoshopped beyond all recognition (and importantly so - some of these projects were strictly confidential, nothing gets in the way of a good gig poster though). Following two incredibly successful 2016 dates and a top floor takeover at a NYE party that felt more like a warehouse rave, every month of the new year ANSYS brings a different flavour of bass music to the 200-cap basement on Middle Street.

The first date of their residency was an old skool Jungle and DnB extravaganza that saw them book Metalheadz legend DJ Storm alongside some up and coming Bristol talent. The following date took a turn into the atmospheric, featuring Natureboy Gold, brooding Berlin techno and an out of control smoke machine. On Friday the 17th of March, ANSYS are filling a persistent gap in Brighton's music scene: Grime. Inviting Prince Rapid of Ruff Sqwad, Sinta of Double Clapperz and some underground Bristolian talent on support, the St. Paddy's Day event looks set to be a night of pure, high energy debauchery. If ANSYS provide parties across the bass music spectrum (they do), then this is without a doubt the wobbliest, murkiest night so far.

What's comes next following the April 21st date is unclear - ANSYS has been one of Sticky Mike's most successful ever residencies, packing the venue to the rafters time after time, of course sometimes this results in a few too many people behind the decks and maybe the occasional smoke alarm, but as as a party-goer, these easygoing vibes are exactly what you want. ANSYS have a refreshingly light-hearted take on clubbing, backed by their hilarious monthly giveaways, that is seen so rarely these days. Because of this, if ANSYS don't extend their residency, we have no doubt that they will find a new home soon enough; there are even rumblings of a summer warehouse party, but we'll have to wait for more info on that. The guest mix comes from ANSYS resident and co-founder Prysee - 50 minutes of impossibly viscous beats and rhymes spanning grime, R'n'G and dubstep. Volume sliders to full, if you know what's good for you:
