Paypal's new app Venmo has made their transaction data public by default which is an... interesting decision

The app industry is worth a staggering 60 billion dollars. Every day, more and more of our daily processes are being digitised, handled through the medium of mobile apps so that you can order food, communicate, watch, buy, date, and eventually shag, through the intermediary of a phone screen.

Banking apps are a huge section of the industry and apps like Monzo, Circle, and others are undoubtedly revolutionising the way that we transfer cash between mates.

Paypal's app, Venmo, is cut from a similar cloth, allowing users to send and receive money directly from their bank accounts, or by loading up their Venmo account with currency first.

However, somebody at Venmo made a decision. That decision was to make an absolute shit load of user data available to anyone through the app's public API. This includes personal data like names and photos, transaction times, and, crucially, transaction references.

We've all transferred money with a hilarious reference attached, I'm sure. However, somebody has created a web page which (legally) trawls Venmo's public API for any unsavoury transactions references and posts them in real time. And yeah, there's a lot:

Whether or not these transactions are actual drug deals, or playful jokes between friends, can probably never be proven. Either way, it makes for an eye opening read.
