Calypso-rock favourites Cassia returned to the city of Bristol with an awesome performance at SWX2.

Cassia were back in Bristol on Thursday night, March 8, to finish their latest tour of the UK.

Support came from two local acts, indie-rock band Fossette and the tropical dream sandwich that is James Humphrys. Cassia clearly have a friendly, respectful following; it’s so easy to talk over the support bands, but this audience listened attentively and perhaps even found a new act they liked.

Sufficiently warmed up, Cassia were met with huge celebration. There was immediate energy in the room as the calypso-vibes poured off the stage. They began with a long instrumental intro, with drums that pulsated through your chest resulting in a beat that was inescapable.

During their song ‘Moana’, a couple of beach balls were set free amongst the crowd. That, coupled with the spirited dance moves from fans, made you feel like you were in a tropical party spot – who knew it was actually SWX2? Lead singer Rob Ellis encouraged the moving and grooving as he introduced their 2017 tune ‘Weekender’ by saying, “please have a dance, it’ll make us feel good”. There were smiles all round, so Cassia should feel great about that.

Cassia proved themselves as a live band at this show. They were tight, enthusiastic and really enjoying every moment. After selling out half the dates for this tour, it’s obvious why they’re in such demand.

They also played ‘Come & Talk’ and ‘Out Of Her Mind’, popular numbers from their latest EP Movers and Shapers. Both songs were welcomed with big excitement and singing-along from the audience.

They finished with their 2016 song ‘100 Times Over’, a chilled-out tune with a catchy chorus that is a strong favourite with Cassia fans. Officially ‘Paradise Beach’ was their last song of the night, when they came back on for a well-deserved encore.

Cassia have just been announced on the Dot to Dot Festival line-up so, if you fancy catching them in Manchester, Nottingham or Bristol then you can buy tickets here.
