A last-minute venue change due to some unorganised booking made no difference to the quality of Banfi’s set at The Louisiana on Wednesday night.

Originally due to play SWX-2, there was an error with a double booking for the same room. Despite this, and with a huge slice of luck, The Louisiana offered up their room above a pub for the show, inviting Banfi back to where they performed last September.

After two quality and hilarious support acts, including a song about a sock (shout out to second support act Mummy for that one!), three-piece group Banfi began their set to attentive silence from the audience. The ability to control the volume of the room was clear from the start, and something Banfi did incredibly well throughout the set.

Being above a pub there was of course the odd talkative member of the crowd, but embracing this, bassist Chris McCuaig exchanged Scottish accents with the man in question before launching into a cover of Peter Gabriel’s ‘Mercy Street’.

Despite only just releasing their new EP The Jack Powell EP, the lads showed how hard they’ve been working behind the scenes by giving us a taster of new song ‘Fabulous’, proving that the band’s quality is only going upwards.

The set was filled with all of their back catalogue interspersed with friendly chats with the crowd, explaining and apologising for the situation we found ourselves in with the venue change.

One of the highlights of the set came in the form of a stripped back version of their song ‘Caroline’. Coupled with an explanation of the emotional story behind the track, lead singer Joe Banfi admitted that the studio version was recorded with so many instruments that it made it impossible for them to play live. This was only a positive, however, as the acoustic version of the track was simply beautiful, and the response from the crowd was deservedly deafening.

Closing with ‘Rosedale House’, Banfi’s return to Bristol was a spectacular gathering of similarly invested fans for some gorgeous music. The venue change to the intimate Louisiana only heightened the effect of the group’s magnificent music, and they proved themselves to be one of the most exciting bands at the moment.
