The must-have apps to get you through the academic year.
As a student, myself I know the struggles of keeping everything organized, managing work and trying not to overspend so I can have a good night out at the end of (or in the middle of the week.
Thankfully, our beloved phones have saved us again by providing us with the key to leading a stress-free student life for the absolutely no cost.
Nowadays you can literally get an app for anything and for you students I have pulled together the crème de la crème of apps you WILL need! Click the pics for download links.
Unidays
If you are a student you may already know about this app but to my surprise, I have actually come across quite a lot of people who have never heard of it! Unidays is one of the best apps around for students! By simply signing up the website with your college or uni details you will have full access to amazing deals and discounts on shops and products you love.
The app can get you deals from shops such as; Superdrug, Forever 21, Accessorize, Jack Wills, Boohoo, Topman and much more!
Who doesn’t love a good money saver?
Native
We've put ourselves second, which we think is a classy move (you're welcome, Unidays)
With Native, you can explore all the events going on in your city. We have a full events guide in Brighton, Bristol, Nottingham, Liverpool, Southampton, and Plymouth, with more cities being added all the time.
From uni socials to arena shows to tiny, intimate basement club nights, you'll be able to find it on Native. With our guestlists, drink deals, and ticket comparison service, you'll save money any time you use our app to plan your night out and with our exclusive VR reviews you can check out a venue before you leave the house.
Campus Society
Campus Society is an app that I only recently found and boy am I glad I stumbled upon it!
This app is great for Uni students but especially for freshers since it basically works as a network for people to find others on their course and fun events to go to during the opening week.
The app works similar to Facebook as you can post information to certain channels or groups and add people as friends, the more you talk to people and interact with posts the higher your GPA increases.
The GPA is a number that sits next to your name/username on the app, the more you do on the app the more the number increases. This shows other users that you contribute a lot and gives off a friendly vibe from your account.
The app was really made to help students meet, collaborate and really just have a good time together. My experience with it has gone down really well and I've actually met a lot of people who are going to the same uni as me. It's helped me find a crowd of people who have similar interests to me and it’s also been a great way to find events and societies that I can attend to have a good time.
Timetable
This is another app that I have only recently just found but in all honesty, it’s been a massive life saver for me and my unorganized ways.
If you’re anything like me, which I hope isn’t the case, you find organizing things extremely difficult and when it comes to the end of the day you’re swamped in due dates and events without even realizing it.
This year I have personally made it my goal to stay organized and after searching the app store for the best tool to help me I finally stumbled upon Timetable.
From reading the name you can probably guess what this app does but, to explain it briefly, Timetable is basically an app where you can put in the hours you are doing at uni/work or even log any events/due dates you have coming up.
The app is free but you can spend a small amount of 99p to get a few extra features like rotation to see a full week’s timetable, ways to export your timetable and no adds.
iTunes U
iTunes U Is a great app for Apple users who are looking for free online sources of information to do with their course. The app provides free podcasts, app recommendations, free books and free courses to follow!
Basically, it’s all free!
Out of all the apps, I’ve talked about in this article, iTunes U is definitely one of the best out there for educational purposes, it really does have everything you need to learn.
The app provides information for courses such as; Computer science, health, and medicine, Music, Art, Design, Engineering, Philosophy, and Mathematics.
Quizlet
Quizlet is an appthat I have used a lot in the past to help with learning small pieces of information quickly.
The app provides you with flashcards for any subject and any area of that subject, it’s great for quick revision and since its free its all the better.
It's you're going to be studying a course that's very academic or your tutor has suddenly thrown a lot of big words at you and you have to memorize them all for next week, you will need this app! Trust me.
StudyBreak
Studybreak is one of the best free apps I have ever found. It is the perfect tool to destroy your procrastination problems, with is something I, unfortunately, suffer from.
Once you have downloaded the app, you’ll need to give it permission to send you notifications, after this Studybreak is super easy to use!
When you are trying to get your head down to study sometimes you can get distracted by app notifications, messages or you can just get bored. This app will help you keep your head down and even send you reminders if you aren’t studying when you are supposed to.
It’s simple, all you have to do it place your phone on a flat surface, such as a table, and press the start button. The timer will count upwards to let you know how long you have been studying for but if you pick up your phone the app will tell you to put it down and continue studying.
You can even put down on the app what you are studying and how long you want to study for, one thing that is great is that you can even say how many breaks you want and how long you want your breaks to be.
Wish
Have you ever found a rare buy on the internet for a super cheap price? How did you feel when you found that item? Want to feel like that again?
Well, I have the perfect app for you!
Wish.com is a website, that is now an app, that has tonnes of amazing deals and awesome products for super cheap prices. The range of products Wish sells is unbelievable, from technology to clothes to household appliances.
The only downfall of Wish can be the delivery time, most of the products sold on the site are from China, Japan, and other countries. Sometimes you might have to wait longer for your item depending on what you buy if you really want something fast and urgent you might have to go somewhere else. But if you are looking for a good cheap product and don’t mind waiting maybe 2-4 weeks Wish will be perfect for you!
As a student Wish is my one true savor; cheap headphones, posters, wall art and household supplies all at the click of a button.
Padlet
Padlet is a great app for organizing notes, pictures, videos and audio files. This app was first introduced to me during college and I’ve been using it for practically everything since.
The app is basically a corkboard for your phone. You can pin important information to it and organize that information in any way you want, the app also has some cool features like being able to add people to your Padlet with the option to let them just view it or even contribute.
This is why this app is great for group work and it's also a great way to show your tutors all your work in one place, just add them to the Padlet and send them a link via email.
MyNTU - Bonus for Nottingham Trent Students
If you're studying at Nottingham Trent University, like myself, this app is a must-have!
Nottingham Trent has their own uni app and it's actually quite good! The app is called MyNTU and with it, you can access anything to do with Trent.
The widgets are set out like a windows phone background which makes it really easy to find locate things you need fast.
If you are studying at NTU I would strongly suggest getting this app, it's too good not to have and having access to your NTU email it's quite necessary and will make your student life a lot easier!
