Jersey’s annual Weekender Festival is set to take place on September 1 and 2 at the Royal Jersey Showground.

Weekender is the Channel Islands' largest festival, with music, food and entertainment on offer to those of all ages. The festival has previously hosted the likes of Madness, Sigma and Rudimental, with this year’s event shaping up to be just as successful as the last. Weekender aims to embrace the old and the new, appealing to a wide audience interested in all genres of music. Make sure you end the summer right by getting immersed in Jersey’s all-weekend festival.

Some of Weekender’s headliner acts have been announced already, with Rag’N’Bone Man, Dizzee Rascal and Big Shaq taking over the main stage on Saturday, followed by Rita Ora and Sigrid closing the festival on Sunday.

Best known for his popular track, Human, Rag’N’Bone Man is set to grace the main stage at Weekender, performing a number of his best-loved tracks from his debut album. His career skyrocketed since the release of his debut album, with him since winning Best British Breakthrough Act at the BRIT Awards and selling over a million copies of his album. Rag’N’Bone Man has been named the UK ambassador of the worldwide event, Record Store Day, for 2018, for which he has recorded two new songs direct to vinyl. They were both released on April 21 and are exclusive to his special edition vinyl. His blues-style pop is complemented by his unique baritone, bass vocals, which allow him to produce powerful soul anthems, gaining him well-earned global popularity. Human became the best-selling male debut album of the decade in the UK, with his genre-defying music providing a modern take on the hip-hop and blues scene. Rag’N’Bone Man has a busy few months ahead of him, performing across Europe and the UK in the coming months. Thankfully, he has found the time to make a stop at Weekender 2018, giving Channel Islanders an opportunity to hear his legendary raspy vocals live.

Dizzee Rascal will also be performing on the Saturday of the festival, showcasing his well-known hip-hop hits. As a major grime pioneer, his music was influential throughout the 00s in merging the sounds of garage, hip-hop and R&B to create grime as we know it today. His debut album Boy in da Corner brought him into the limelight and won him the 2003 Mercury Prize. Since then, he has hit number one in the British charts four times and made it into the Top Ten with almost every single one of his albums. After a few years of silence from the star, Dizzee has released a new album Raskit, which grapples with issues of identity and dwelling on the past. Ghost is the most successful track from the album, staying loyal to his vocal tics and punchy hip-hop beats that gained him so much popularity through the 00s. This stripped-down album has allowed him to reclaim his position as a garage pioneer, showing off his lyrical talents to get back into the pop scene. Dizzee is known for his energetic performances, where he jumps around the stage and, sometimes, ends up in the crowd, so don’t miss out on the chance to participate in one of his memorable performances.

English rapper, actor and comedian Michael Dapaah will be heading to Jersey at the end of the summer to perform at Weekender. Dapaah is best known for portraying the fictional Big Shaq, a comedy creation inspired by the London grime scene. Big Shaq is best known for his online mockumentary series Somewhere in London, which followed four characters' journeys to success. These comedic skits have turned into a full-time job, with Big Shaq gaining nationwide popularity with his lighthearted portrayal of the grime music scene. Appearing in online videos wasn't the end for Big Shaq, with him later appearing on Charlie Sloth’s BBC Radio 1Xtra show, Fire in the Booth, and releasing his debut single Man’s Not Hot. This comedic rap saw a massive growth in his popularity, with fans loving his track so much that it turned into a viral meme. Big Shaq’s rap cut isn't only a comedic stint, with his lyrical talents providing an impactful energy alongside his well-structured lyrics that incorporate the well-known wry British humour.   Weekender will offer fans the chance to see Big Shaq perform in all his glory, so be sure to mark the date in your calendars.

Rita Ora is yet another incredible musician who will be performing at Weekender, coinciding with the release of her latest album. Ora has had an incredibly successful career since entering the music scene back in 2007. She released her debut album Ora in 2012, which immediately rose to number one in the UK album charts. She is due to release her second studio album in autumn of this year, heading on tour before this release, with fans hoping they will hear some album previews in her live performances. The album will contain top 10 hits Your Song and Anywhere, two of Ora’s most successful tracks. Their upbeat rhythms and electronic instrumentals make these tracks to be the perfect songs for the summer season ahead, with her powerful vocals complimenting her positive, romantic tracks. In between releasing her debut album and 2018, Rita Ora has worked in TV and film, producing a number of records, including For You, which appeared in the Fifty Shades series. She has also judged on The X Factor and hosted America’s Next Top Model. She shows no signs of slowing down, set to appear at the Isle of Wight Festival 2018 and RiZE Festival, all before the release of her new album. Weekender will be another great chance to hear Ora’s powerful vocals at a summer festival.

Norwegian singer-songwriter Sigrid is performing on the final day of the festival, giving Channel Islands' fans a chance to see her play her tracks live. Sigrid has had phenomenal success over the past year, since the release of her track Don’t Kill My Vibe. This song threw her into the limelight, with her raspy vocals and pumping beats catching the attention of indie lovers across the globe. Her music highlights her vulnerable side, as she is able to take emotional subject matter, and create powerful pop anthems to express these feelings. Sigrid is set to be performing at Leeds and Reading Festival, taking time out of her insanely busy schedule to head over to Jersey to put on, what is bound to be, a memorable performance. Her fun-loving character and unique dancing make her live performances entertaining and eye-catching, so make sure you get the chance to see her live at Weekender 2018.

With more acts yet to be announced, Weekender 2018 is shaping up to be an incredible event and a chance to catch some of your favourite musicians live. Tickets are available from Weekender’s website, or another platforms such as Eventbrite, and are selling fast, so don’t miss out on Jersey’s most anticipated festival of the year.
