Get to know exciting and understanding young artist Au/Ra, following her tour supporting Lewis Capaldi.
Tropes such as ‘rising star’ and ‘alt-pop princess’ are just a few of the titles used in an attempt to define young artist Au/Ra, and somehow don’t quite seem sufficient for such a complex and exciting new talent.
Her melancholic electronic sound, paired with clear, haunting vocals and poetic lyrics create music that is somehow ethereal yet firmly part of our modern world in its themes and preoccupations. Her unusual upbringing may have something to do with this maturity and perspective - Ibizan-born and Antigua-raised, Au/Ra describes the relaxed multi-national vibe of the island community, at the same time as acknowledging the difficulties, waiting for water and being unable to rely on electricity and the internet.
Despite her unusual upbringing, there is something within her music that forges an understanding between herself and the listener. This might have something to do with the sheer quality of her work - growing up with a songwriter mother and a producer father, Au/Ra has been surrounded by various musical influences from a young age.
While she cites artists such as Kraftwerk and Pink Floyd among her influences as well as the indie-rock giants of her generation such as the Arctic Monkeys, her vocal style has been compared to Lorde and Lana Del Rey.
In many ways defying the labels of genre, the 15-year-old singer is still evolving musically and going from strength to to strength after her debut release ‘Concrete Jungle’ in 2016. Written after Au/Ra moved to L.A, the song explores the distance between her island upbringing and the strangeness of the consumerist and media-driven metropolis.
It is this awareness of the adult realities of the world, (potentially amplified by her view of it as a self-defined outsider), paired with an adolescent sensitivity and openness, that gives her work an edge. Her other singles show similar awareness of the preoccupations of today’s youth: ‘Panic Room’ deals with themes of anxiety, an issue that has become increasingly prevalent, and ‘Kicks’, with its anthemic message of inclusivity, demonstrates the tolerance and acceptance that this generation is capable of.
‘Outsider’, as the title suggests, encompasses the feelings of being adrift and apart associated with growing up, and our generation’s difficulty situating themselves in today’s ever-changing world.
Fresh from her tour supporting Lewis Capaldi, and already recognised as an upcoming talent by NME, Wonderland, Popjustice and others, Au/Ra is one to watch. Capable of such beautifully crafted art at such a young age, it will certainly be exciting to watch her develop her music as times goes on.
For now, Au/Ra offers a much needed freshness and originality, sparked by the tension between her talent and her youth, her outsider status and her innate understanding of what it means to be a teenager in today’s world.
